The “Expectation Gap” in auditing refers to the difference between what the public perceives the role of auditors to be and what auditors actually do. This gap arises due to misunderstandings or unrealistic expectations about the responsibilities, limitations, and objectives of the auditor.

The Legislation gap refers to inconsistencies in regulations that arise without universally accepted international standards. In sustainability reporting and assurance, this gap can manifest as jurisdictional disparities, where different countries have varying requirements, methodologies, or expectations for reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. These disparities can create risks such as greenwashing, reduced comparability, compliance complexity and market confusion.

In this last episode of the Mind the Gap series, we explore this gap with Begoña Navallas,  Professor at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Director of the MACAM; Jonathan Bravo, Director of Regulatory Affairs at the IFRS Foundation; and Jane Diplock AO, International Professional Director and former PIOB member.
